Why are Redbox kiosks being removed? ›

With video viewing transitioning to streaming, it was inevitable that Redbox would ultimately have to give up on its DVD rental kiosks. The company prepared for that transition by launching its own streaming service, while executives pledged to maintain the Redbox rental business for many more years.

You can return your disc at any Box location. Its as simple as that! Find the nearest Box location at: https://www.redbox.com/locations. On your mobile device, in the app, the GPS locator is on the lower right corner of any screen.

Our rental fees are charged per night: DVDs - $2.25. Blu-Ray - $2.25. 4K UHD - $2.50.

Non Redbox+ Members: Return your disc to any Box location before 9:00 pm the day after you reserve or rent. Returns after 9:00 pm will be subject to another nightly rental fee. Redbox+ Members: Return your disc to any Box location before 11:59 pm the day after you reserve or rent.

On May 11, 2022, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment announced its intention to acquire Redbox for $375 million. The acquisition was completed on August 11, 2022. At the end of 2022, the company operated about 34,000 kiosks nationwide, and plans to increase that number with 1,000 more kiosks in 2023.

For each day you keep a rental, you'll be charged for another rental period + applicable tax. If you hold onto your disc for the maximum rental period (in most areas, it's 17 days), you'll be charged the maximum charge and the disc is yours to keep.

On your first visit to Redbox (or the first time you use a new payment card at Redbox), you can rent a maximum of 3 discs. Customers who have rented from Redbox before can rent a maximum of 5 discs.

It's because of the first sale doctrine. Redbox and family video can buy DVDs and Blu-Rays (at a maximum) at the same price as consumer DVD/Blu-Ray--and rent them out without permission from the copyright holder. That means video rental stores can undercut the VOD prices.

You can purchase previously rented movies at select boxes. At the Box - select Buy Movies on the main page. If you don't see this option, then currently we don't have movies for sale at that particular box. Online - visit https://www.redbox.com and select 'Movies to Own' under At the Box.

Does Redbox take cash? ›

A credit card or debit card is required to rent movies, even if you are using a promo code / Redbox Perks.

If you don't return the rental, you'll be charged at the end of its maximum rental period.

A class action lawsuit has been filed on behalf consumers that rented videos from Redbox Automated Retail LLC. The class action lawsuits claims consumers were wrongfully charged late fees when the retailer advertised no late fees on videos.

But Redbox has refused to remove its kiosks from CVS locations, even though the Redbox-CVS contract has expired. In addition, Redbox owes CVS more than $424,000 in unpaid commissions from these kiosks. Accordingly, CVS brings this action for both equitable relief and damages.

While Redbox used to offer video game rentals, at the end of 2019 the company switched to TV and movie rentals only. Gamerang was another video game rental service that no longer exists.
