ANOKA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE2+ weeks agoAgencyToday is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, where we remember all the fallen guardians of peace. In Anoka County, seven line of duty deaths have represented the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office, Anoka Police Department, Columbia Heights Police Department, Lino Lakes Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, and St. Francis Police Department. Deputy Ernest Zettergren – EOW December 7, 1953 Deputy Ernest Zettergren was shot and killed when he interrupted a burglary at a local tavern. Zettergren had noticed that a window was broken out at the business and pulled up behind a car in front of it. He radioed the license plate when the suspect came out and approached the vehicle. The man shot Deputy Zettergren twice and fled with the deputy's weapon and clipboard. The man was arrested later in the morning and confessed to the murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison. His wife and six children survived Deputy Zettergren. Detention Deputy Richard Legler – EOW August 9, 1986 During the early morning hours on Saturday, August 9, 1986, Detention Deputy Richard Legler and fellow Detention Deputy Anthony Hesch, were on their way to work at the jail. An unknown dark-colored car pulled alongside Legler’s vehicle and fired a shot. The shot from the fleeing car entered Legler’s driver’s side window and struck him in the left arm. Legler struggled to pull the vehicle over to the right side of the road. The round struck his left arm just behind his uniform patch, ultimately piercing his left lung. The suspect was later found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It is believed that the suspect may have seen the jail uniforms worn by Legler and Hesch, and seeing the uniformed men could have triggered the shooting as no other cars had been reported shot at that morning. At the time of his death, Detention Deputy Richard Legler was 38 years old and had worked for the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office for approximately three years.93Like11
ANOKA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE2+ weeks agoAgencySadly, the scam calls continue to impact members of our community. Recently, scammers claiming to be a part of our jail and civil unit have been trying to obtain money from victims. They even "spoof" legitimate phone numbers for our office so they appear to be more official. As a reminder, here is a list of things law enforcement will NEVER call and ask you for... - Bail or commissary money on behalf of a friend or family member in jail. - Money to “take care” of an outstanding warrant you have. - Gift cards or bitcoin. For any reason. - Money. If you receive a phone call from any person claiming to be with law enforcement and asking for money, HANG UP. No legitimate law enforcement agency will call you to ask for money.35Like3

ANOKA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICEa week agoAgencyThe Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA) announced today that Anoka County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Tanner Shipman has been awarded the 2024 “Officer of the Year” for his heroic off-duty actions in South Dakota. Deputy Shipman was on vacation in Sturgis, South Dakota in August of 2023 when he noticed a male suspect engaged in an incident with a South Dakota State trooper. Nearby, the suspect was pointing and shooting a firearm at the trooper, which caused Deputy Shipman to promptly retrieve a firearm belonging to a family member with his group and assist the trooper who was on the ground. After identifying himself as law enforcement to the trooper, Deputy Shipman and the trooper saw the suspect attempt to get into the trooper’s squad vehicle and a shootout continued. The suspect was ultimately taken into custody and Deputy Shipman assisted with medical care until further responders arrived. He survived his injuries and later pled guilty to shooting at the trooper. Sheriff Brad Wise states, “Deputy Shipman’s 18-year career with the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office has countless stories of selfless actions and commitments to justice. It is not surprising that Deputy Shipman would instantly assist someone, even when it comes with great bodily risk, or even death. This well-deserved award from the MPPOA is the highest honor a member of law enforcement can receive, as it comes from law enforcement peers throughout Minnesota. Deputy Shipman is an inspiration to law enforcement, as well as all in our community.” MPPOA will formally honor Deputy Shipman and other award winners on Saturday, June 15, 2024. ANOKA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE2+ weeks agoAgencyToday we remember Corporal Timothy Bowe of the Minnesota State Patrol. Corporal Bowe was shot and killed early in the morning on June 7, 1997, while assisting county deputies respond to a shooting call. He and three deputies parked their cruisers and walked approximately 3/4 of a mile into the secluded house where they spotted a car with the suspect lying across the front seats with his feet hanging out. As they were approaching the vehicle the suspect sat up and began firing, striking Corporal Bowe in the chin from about 35 yards away. He died at about 2:00 A.M., approximately one hour after the shooting. The three other deputies with him returned fire. An autopsy revealed that the man took his own life. Corporal Bowe had been with the agency for 15 years and was survived by his wife, 6 year old daughter, and 9-month-old son.186Like24
