The reason I wanted to keep things pretty simple with this recipe, is so that anyone can make this wonderful meal for breakfast or even dessert. Well, also, because whole milk, leftover bread, cinnamon, and coconut oil were all the things I had at home in the morning. And, I’m definitely not rushing at 7am to the grocery store just to buy a different bread or butter. Seriously. This is the best French toast recipe you can make spontaneously using whatever you have!

Simple French Toast Ingredients

Bread: I used a day-old, okay, 2-day old bread as I don’t like my French toast to be too soft and be falling apart once dipped in the batter. Other types of bread that would be great for French toast are brioche or even sandwich bread. The last time when I was updating the pictures, I actually used hot dog buns to make French toast. It was SO good! You do want to go for thicker slices if you’re using fresh bread.

Milk: Use whole or skim milk for this, some French toast variations even involve heavy cream. Ha. We’re not going there. If you want to make this recipe dairy-free use almond milk or coconut milk. Or do like I did when making the hot dog French toast recipe and just double the eggs and leave out the milk completely. It was amazing!

Eggs: Well, sometimes you can definitely skip the milk, but you cannot skip the eggs for this recipe! Make sure to keep your eggs clear of shells and to beat them really well.

Butter/Oil: You can use butter or coconut oil to fry the bread. In this recipe, I used coconut oil and I loved the taste and smell even better. The great thing about using coconut oil for frying was that it did not burn (unlike butter). And also, French toast that smells like coconut? Come on.

Cinnamon: Because it makes any breakfast recipe a lot better. You need to mix in just a little bit into the batter and you need to whisk it really well.

Optionally: You can also optionally add vanilla extract to make the flavor more intense.

How To Make French Toast

Making this delicious sweet breakfast is ultra-easy.

The first thing you want to start with is cutting the bread into slices or into pieces of your desired size.

Next, whisk the eggs with milk, cinnamon and vanilla, if you’ve decided to add some. To do this, use a bowl with a flat bottom – this is better when you start dipping the bread.

Now it’s time to dip and flip each piece of bread in the egg and milk batter. Make sure to cover each side evenly and avoid soaking the bread for longer periods. If you soak the bread in the batter your toast will end up soggy!

Heat some oil in a nonstick pan and fry the bread until golden brown on both sides! Repeat for as many slices of bread as you have and if needed, add a bit more coconut oil for the second batch.

How To Serve

I like French toast pretty plain. I’d basically just put some honey or maple syrup on it and that is it. That’s enough for me.

Other toppings you might enjoy can be whipped cream, berries, and fruit…or even powdered sugar.

What else…OMG, what if you top it with some vanilla ice cream? I know this is more of a dessert option, but still absolutely divine!
