What is the academic calendar? ›

Academic calendar is a schedule of all of the events that occur in an academic year. These events may include examination dates, spring break or reading week and the last day of the semester. Academic calendars—and the dates included—can be presented at the semester level or as part of an academic year-long calendar.

Look through the syllabus for each of your courses. Add important dates and work periods to your planner or calendar. Add regular due dates and add due dates for big assignments. Add blocks of time to work on big assignments ahead of the due dates.

A Calendar year ranges from 1 January through to 31 December. An Academic year is comprised of two Teaching Periods, January to June, and July to December.

The following are non-public holidays observed by New York City Public Schools: Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Election Day, Diwali, the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, Lunar New Year, Good Friday, Eid al-Fitr, Passover (first two days), and Eid al-Adha.

Most universities and colleges usually run from early September until the end of April or early May. Often, this winter session is split into two terms running September to December and January to April. Various forms of summer studies may be offered May to August.

An academic calendar that uses semesters traditionally has two terms, in the fall and spring, and a trimester academic calendar traditionally has three terms, in the fall, spring, and summer.

Academic calendars are systems by which you define the landmark dates that drive much of the day-to-day business at the academic institution. Each academic calendar contains cancel, withdrawal, and drop deadlines along with other landmark dates that vary, depending on the academic calendar type.

An academic planner is a planner or agenda specifically for students. Generally, they cover July through June (as opposed to January through December) in order to align with the school year.

You can use a 16-month diary to get organised for the academic year, running from August to August, then use the remaining months from September to December to plan the busy end of the year and Christmas period, or alternatively you could start from a later, preferred month such as January.

The length of the school day remains the same, with schools in session for six hours and 20 minutes.

The last day of school for New York City public schools is Wednesday, June 26, according to the 2023-2024 academic calendar. Students won't have to wait until June 26 to get a day off, however.

Schools generally start classes around 8 a.m. and end around 3 p.m., with some beginning even earlier.

Semesters in US universities

Classes in the first semester usually begins in August and lasts until the end of December, including exams. The second semester runs from January/February to may-June. Winter vacation lasts 2-3 weeks, summer 10-12 weeks.
