We have made a dozen variations of a french dip and this recipe is probably the easiest and most affordable. If you happen to love all things salty like us, you can substitute the beef consommé for 1 can french onion soup or even put a can of each.

5 Ingredient Crock-pot French Dips - Simply Made Recipes (2)This is a dump and go recipe and they only tip I have for you today is buying a quality roast to cook. Your meat should always be bright red and have limited fatty areas. You may also substitute the French bread for whatever you have on hand. Maybe a hamburger bun?

  • 1 fresh french bread loaf
  • 1 can consomme
  • 1 packet of Ranch seasoning
  • 8 slices of provolone cheese
  • 1.5 pounds chuck roast
  1. In the morning, put the chuck roast into crock-pot on a low heat setting. Rub the Ranch packet seasoning all over meat and add in 1 can of consomme.
  2. Let cook 6-8 hours. Turn crock-pot setting to warm.
  3. Preheat oven to broil.
  4. Remove roast from crock-pot and shred.
  5. Cut the french bread loaf in half and place under broil for a few minutes. You have the option of buttering the bread before broiling to bring out some extra flavor and nice crisp.
  6. Remove bread from the oven and immediately place cheese and roast shredding onto sandwich. Cut into separate servings.
  7. Place some of the crock-pot juice (au jus) into ramekins to put on the side of each sandwich and your family is ready to enjoy an easy, delicious dinner.

Definitely a hit!!! The ranch seasoning (I used Hidden Valley) makes this meat absolutely, mouthwateringly delicious. And the crock pot slow cooking it all day just makes it melt in your mouth. I also agree that using a big freshly baked loaf of French bread is the way to go. Hopefully your favorite grocery store bakes loaves fresh daily, otherwise toasted Brioche rolls or even Bolillo rolls work great for this recipe as well. 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! Will be adding to the biweekly- or even weekly- rotation! Especially on those cold chilly evenings. One thing I have added, if I happen to have some on hand, is very thinly sliced onion. Just gives a nice flavor, and if sliced thinly enough you can’t even really tell they’re in there but it does add a nice touch to the recipe. 😉

How many servings? Is there just enough meat for one loaf of bread? Looks good.

6 servings. Feeds 4. You can do one french bread and cut into portions or individual sandwich rolls as shown in the photos. I think I prefer that big loaf of fresh french bread though.
